What are the most reliable dehumidifiers?

By Cynthia Lawrence, Emily Long posted 1 June 22 The GE APER50LZ is not far behind. It has a slightly smaller tank than the Frigidaire FFAP5033W1, but it also has an active water pump. Its digital interface makes it easy to change settings. However, it is not as well ergonomically designed and it is more difficult to move or store it during the winter.

What put the Frigidaire FFAP5033W1 above the other devices we consider is its design. It is stylish and has an attractive digital display, making it easy to see indicator lights and settings. One of the few areas where the older model, the Frigidaire FFAP7033T1, fell short was in the initial configuration of the pump. The testers and owners of the devices reported that removing the plug from the pump socket was complicated and that in some cases the plug simply broke.

This defect is not unique to Frigidaire, but it is something you should prepare for if you buy this model for the convenience of having a pump. We will be on the lookout to see if the FFAP5033W1 suffers from the same problem. In the switch from FFAP7033T1 to FFAP5033W1, Frigidaire increased tank capacity from 13.1 pints to 16.9 pints. If you live in a very humid space and run the machine continuously, this is a significant improvement, because the volume of water will fill up quite quickly and the device will turn off until you empty the bucket.

The GE APER50LZ, our finalist, has a capacity of 15 pints. That said, the GE APER50LZ is an equal alternative to the Frigidaire FFAP7033T1 if you can find it at a better price. We loved trying the Midea 20 smart dehumidifier. Once connected to its application, you can monitor it from your phone, even see humidity levels and receive alerts when the bucket is full.

You can also change the settings remotely, by adjusting the fan speed with three levels to choose from. Voice control is available via Alexa or Google Assistant, although two-factor authentication is missing. However, it stands out for its storage, since this dehumidifier can be 'nested' in itself, occupying half the space. In terms of performance, it does the job and proved to be a useful asset for us when it comes to a flooded basement.

It's also incredibly easy to empty, thanks to the bottom half converts into a bucket and handle. Despite the name, it can contain around 24 pints, although it is still relatively small compared to others on our list. Ultimately, this dehumidifier has a very user-friendly design that couldn't be more compact to store. Read our full review of the Midea 20 pint cube dehumidifier.

The LG PuriCare UD501KOG5 is a 50-pint medium capacity dehumidifier ideal for drying medium-sized spaces. It has an attractive design, a large digital display and a transparent water bucket with a large handle. This makes it easy to see when the tank needs to be emptied, and the handle makes it easy to transport the tank to a drain or sink. The 22-pint Frigidaire FFAD2233W1, which replaces the 30-pint Frigidaire FFAD3033R1, is a great choice for laundries, apartments and other small spaces.

It is portable and its four wheels make it easy to move from room to room if necessary. The oldest machine, the FFAD3033R1, performed well in real-world tests for water removal, reaching humidity levels that were 28% below where testing began). It also worked well on humidistat accuracy and cold room performance. The Frigidaire FFAD2233W1 also has user-friendly design features similar to those of its older cousin, the FFAP5033W1, including an easy-to-access filter and cable storage hooks.

You probably don't need a Wi-Fi dehumidifier, but if smart home devices are your thing, then the 50-pint Frigidaire FGAC5044W1 might give you what you're looking for. You will receive push notifications when the water bucket is full and you can remotely control the fan speed, target humidity and power. You can also set up voice controls for the Frigidaire FGAC5044W1 with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. This dehumidifier is quite similar to our main selection, the Frigidaire FFAP5033W1, but it swaps Wi-Fi for an electric water pump.

The unit comes with a drain hose to allow the tank to drain passively, or you can unload the 2 gallon bucket by hand. Hundreds of Amazon, Wayfair and Walmart customer reviewers really liked the Frigidaire FGAC5044W1 (even if many of them didn't like its mobile app), rating the unit 4.4 out of 5 stars on average. As a result, larger dehumidifiers, which originally offered 70 pint capacities, have now been reduced to capacities of 45 to 50 pints. This is because warm air can hold more water than cold air, so the dehumidifier will naturally absorb less at lower temperatures.

The medium-sized models, on the other hand, have been reduced from 50 pints to 30 pints. While small dehumidifiers have gone from 30 pints to approximately 20 pints. Due to this recent change, many models are being discontinued and replaced with updated designs to accommodate the new procedure. For example, the GE APER70LW has been replaced by the almost identical GE APER50LZ.

We will update these rankings as we learn more. According to the old regulations, these sizes were 70, 50 and 30 pints, respectively, and you'll see those numbers with the three oldest models above. In its tall configuration, the FFAP5033W1 reduced the humidity in our 135 square foot test space by 12% in one hour, from 59% to 47% (same as our best option), while battling a powerful humidifier that also worked high above, our approach to a challenging space, such as an unsealed cellar in the middle of a heavy rain. At low temperature, with the humidifier also at a low temperature (approaching a less challenging space, such as a spare room or a closed porch that does not receive direct access from a home's HVAC system), it reduced humidity even further, by 15% in an hour.

In overnight tests in a 3,100 square foot space, it completely filled its 16.9 pint (2.1 gallon) tank in less than 12 hours in height. For cost and performance, this BLACK+DECKER Energy Star certified model is excellent value for money. It is relatively compact with swivel wheels for easy maneuverability and works quieter than other units of its size. While you can remove up to 30 pints of water a day in rooms up to 1,000 square feet, we don't recommend using a dehumidifier this size in a very large room.

Our tester used this unit in a room of approximately 240 square feet and emptied the tank once a day during a period of heavy rain. In a larger space, you may need to empty it more often. Alternatively, if you have the right configuration, an included hose allows continuous draining into a sink, floor drain or directly to the outside. In general, our editor liked the sleek design, the quiet buzz and the easy process of removing the tank.

Our editor says I could definitely say that the space was drier, which is better for my allergies. If you are looking for a reliable dehumidifier that is better for short-term use, consider this TOSOT model. . .
